In December of 2004 the world witnessed the deadliest natural disaster ever recorded in human history. Over 300,000 people were killed when an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia, measuring 9.3 on the Richter scale, triggered a series of massive waves (over five-stories high in some places) that sped across the Indian Ocean at speeds equivalent to that of a jet airliner.
The natural phenomenon that struck the coastal areas in Asia is widely known as a tsunami. It comes from the Japanese language—the word tsu meaning “harbor” and nami meaning “wave”. It was coined by fishermen long ago who returned to their villages and cities only to find their homes utterly destroyed by a giant wave that had struck while they were out at sea.
The strangest part of their report was the fact that they had no clue that anything spectacular was happening while they were out on the open sea. This is in part because of the dynamics of how a tsunami progresses; they may be less than a foot high out in the open sea, but as the wave nears the coast the rising shore amplifies the energy within the surge, causing it to grow larger and larger.
As a result of the events that unfolded on that day in 2004, the world began to take note of the tremendous amounts of power and devastation that can be unleashed in a tsunami.
What does any of this have to do with the Christian walk?
Well, consider this: when someone invites Christ to be the Lord of their life, the Bible says that a tremendous amount of power is unleashed inside them; the affects of which may go unnoticed for some time, but eventually grow greater and greater so much so that others cannot escape from being impacted in some way by the change that God has begun in their life. That’s what the Christian life is all about.
The prayer of the leadership at Vansickle Baptist Church is that you will be FLOODED by the love of God, and then be used to flood others with that same love. We’re praying that people will be flooded by the love of God and overwhelmed with the goodness of His Son, Jesus Christ. Everything we do, all of our activities, our hopes, and dreams revolve around this idea. We hope you’ll come experience the FLOOD that is the Love of God!
