Advent is both a season of preparation and anticipation for the coming of Christ at Christmastime. It’s name was adopted from the Latin, adventus — “coming; arrival”. In the New Testament, it is this term that is used for the Second Coming of Christ. Thus, the season of Advent anticipates the “coming of Christ” from three different perspectives: the physical nativity in Bethlehem, the reception of Christ in the heart of the believer, and the eschatological Second Coming.

Advent is an ancient practice observed by many believers in the Church, traced back as early as 400 A.D. Generally, it involves a calendar, lighting of an advent wreath with candles, daily devotionals and prayer working up to Christmas day.

Here at VBC, we highlight a different emphasis or theme of Advent each Sunday during the service, and invite our families to light the candles, read scriptures, and pray with us over that week’s theme. Each week will build on the previous one and then culminates on Christmas Eve at our Candlelight Service. We invite you to join us on December 24th at 6pm.
